Türkiye raises fees for passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles, logistics costs may increase
Turkey will increase the fee for the passage of ships through the Bosporus and Dardanelles from July 1. According to the new decision of the authorities, the cost of passage will increase by 8.3 percent and amount to $4.42 per ton. This increase in fees was applied a year ago with an even larger increase.
The main reason for the increase in fees is Turkey's desire to receive new revenues. Experts note that this practice will be applied annually, as the Turkish economy is facing a depreciation of the national currency and rising inflation. The use of the straits and Turkey's rights to them, enshrined in the Montreux Convention, make it possible to review the cost of the passage of ships through the straits.
Experts note that the increase in duties may affect the cost of basic goods such as ore, coal and grain, which have a small difference between cost and sale price. However, for industrial goods transported in containers, the increase in duties will not have a significant impact on the cost of logistics.
Higher tolls for passage through the straits may also lead to an increase in the cost of logistics services associated with the transport of goods through these sea routes. Companies and consumers forced to pay more for logistics services may not be happy with this development.
Despite this, Russian consumers, especially those dependent on grain exports, should not be seriously affected by higher tolls for passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles.
