Description

The historic Alsancak Tarihi Havagazı Fabrikası Coal Gas Plant is a significant cultural site located in Izmir, Turkey. Built in 1862 by Laidloux and Sons, the factory became the first place in the Ottoman Empire where a street lamp was used. Since then, it has undergone many changes, including the transition to electric lighting in the early 20th century and the transfer to the municipality in 1934. The plant ceased operations in 1955, and later its buildings were transferred to the use of ESHOT and IZULAŞ.

In 2007, reconstruction work began, completed in 2008, with the aim of converting the plant into a cultural center. This project has received recognition and awards, including the Metin Sözen Conservation Grand Prix in 2009 and an award from the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects in 2013. Today Alsancak Tarihi Havagazı Fabrikası is a venue for a variety of cultural and artistic events.
