Aspendos Ancient Theater

Description

Aspendos Antik Tiyatro is one of the most outstanding examples of Roman theatrical architecture, built during the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). This unique monument, erected by the architect Zeno, son of Theodore, is dedicated to the gods and emperors of the time. The theater was built thanks to the efforts of two brothers, Curtius Crispinus and Curtius Auspicatus, as evidenced by the inscriptions in Greek and Latin on either side of the entrance.

The Aspendos Theater demonstrates the latest features of Roman theatrical architecture and construction techniques, seating approximately 20 thousand people. This makes it one of the largest and best-preserved theaters of the ancient world.

Near the theater are important landmarks of the city of Aspendos, such as the waterway system. This complex is one of the best preserved examples of ancient water systems. The water towers at both ends of the north-south arch bridge, which stretches for about 1 kilometer, are impressive in their engineering. Water in the city was collected in pear-shaped cisterns carved into the rock, which can be seen in places on the hill. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, a waterway system was developed that allowed water to be obtained more regularly.

At the top of the hill where the theater is located, there are key structures of the city center: the agora, the basilica, the monumental fountain, the parliament building, the monumental street and the Hellenistic temple. All of these ruins are a must-see.
